I'd been concidering a genital piercing for a month or so. I'd cruised around BME the whole time weighing the pros and cons of each. I wanted something that looked pretty but was functional as well. I decided on a triangle, but because they are risky and no one in my area did them, I thought I'd probably take a trip to NYC and see Keith Alexander. I didn't want to make the 7 hr trip to NYC only to be told I wasn't built for it though, so I stopped by Primitive Impressions and spoke to Jason about it, hoping he'd be able to tell me whether or not I was built for it. He doesn't do triangles at all because he doesn't consider them piercings but more of a surgical procedure and therefore couldn't tell if I was built for it. He also mentioned that he knew of only 2 women who had had a triangle pierce and both of them had had problems (he didn't elaborate). Although he did admit that a more experienced piercer than he was could probably do the job fine. I REALLY appreciated that piece of honesty, I know of a few piercers that would probably try to talk me out of it all together just to try to make a buck for themselves.

I'm not sure how I wound up getting a horizontal hood pierce because I had no intention of getting pierced that night (a triangle or otherwise). Jason and I talked quite a bit about the safety and "functionality" of the various genital pierces (I must have been there a few hours). He was very open and I was quite comfortable with him. At this point I was thinking, "I could get another pierce now and a triangle later" only because I knew he wouldn't do anything he wasn't sure of. At this point Jason excused himself to go pierce a few others who had arrived, and I spent some time talking to his wife (who manufactures all the jewelry they use). We discussed the pros and cons of a vertical vs. horizontal hood and I decided on a horizontal because I really don't like the way the verticals look.

I chose a 12g CBR (all my other pierces have been done with a 14g but I REALLY didn't want to run the risk of tearing this one with a small gage) and then went to have a smoke while Jason got ready for me. When I came back he was ready and I stripped down so we could discuss exact placement. I was very picky and he was very patient... a great combo in my opinion. When we agreed on placement I told him, "don't warn me, just do it". He told me to relax, (I have to admit it was harder to relax for this one than for my other pierces) I looked the other way, and he pushed the needle through. It hurt bad, a very sharp pain, and I couldn't help yelling (probably more from the surprise than the pain though) but once the ring was in I wasn't even sore. Jason then handed me a mirror so I could take a look... I said, "I can't believe I just did that". He looked a little worried and asked if I was OK with it. That made me laugh and I told him that I was very OK with it :).

I asked him how he wanted me to heal it and he told me "anti-bacterial soap and neosporin". I had to question the neosporin... he suggested using a Q-tip and wiping the excess off onto a paper towel so you'd only have a thin film of ointment on the outside of the pierce. I still question this practice and in fact haven't used neosporin at all on any of my piercings. Saltwater soaks seem to do the trick for me just fine and I decided not to mess with what works for me. He also told me no sex for 2 weeks (which didn't please my husband at all! :).

The pierce is almost a week old now and hasn't given me any trouble at all. No swelling, soreness, crusties... it's acting like it's already healed, althought I know it's not.

My only future plan at this time is having Jason's wife make me a custom tear-drop ring "just the right length" for after it's healed. The thought of stretching to a 10g has entered my head but I think I may be getting ahead of myself :).

I am now debating on whether or not to bother getting a triangle. I've promised Jason that if I do I'll keep him updated on how it goes. I'll need to do a little more research on the subject before I decide.
